In my work with women entrepreneurs and leaders, I often hear the words “I’m ready to make a change”, and specifically they are referring to being ready to stepping up and dramatically increasing their income and impact in their business.
Often when we are making a change and we are moving beyond our comfort zone, it can feel intimidating and even down right scary. This in of itself, can keep us exactly where we are…and in some cases, stuck…and not taking a step toward our desired goals. Can you relate?
Over the years I have come to realize that there are three key areas to know when someone is truly ready to make a change and will follow through with taking action. I have also applied these three keys to my life and business to get a sense of my own readiness for change. Feel free to adopt these three keys for yourself.
Key #1: Pay attention to the inner restlessness within you. Often we become so immersed in our work that life passes us by. Yet, there is this inner restlessness that we are feeling within. It’s like an inner voice saying that we are meant to be doing something else, or realizing a much bigger mission in our business. If this is the case for you, be sure to pay attention and take some time to reflect on what you truly want.
I recall that when I was in my corporate career, I had the trappings of success, but I consistently felt an inner restlessness that I was meant to do something more, to be more and to realize a much bigger mission. Instead, I was too busy to pay attention…and it took me five more years to realize my dream of becoming an entrepreneur.
Key #2: Your dream has to be bigger than your fear. There’s no question about it, change can bring forth a lot of fear about many things, including questions such as “what if I fail?” and the like. And yet when your dream is so strong and it pulls you forward to taking action then your fear has less importance than your dream. It’s really an empowering feeling when your fear is diminished.
Key #3: Be honest with yourself. This is perhaps the most difficult thing to consider and yet it is critical. When you are thinking about making a change, ask yourself, “Am I ready and willing to make this change right now?” The answer has to be a “yes”. If the answer is “maybe” or “no”, you simply may not be ready to make a change. And the truth is, only you can determine this. The important thing is that you are really honest with yourself because it will strengthen your commitment.
