Today is International Women’s Day! Wishing you a day dedicated to empowering yourself and other women worldwide. Of course, men are welcome too and are encouraged to celebrate and lend their support!
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also focuses on a campaign theme. This year the theme is a call to action to accelerate gender parity.
Here is a brief history. The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. More than one million women and men showed their support of women by participating in public events.
In 1977 following the long-standing movements for women to participate equally in society, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed a day for women’s rights and international peace.
Following the United Nations’ lead, many countries have chosen March 8th to mark global recognition and celebration with many countries observing it is an official holiday, or with widespread events.
So how are you celebrating this day? Perhaps similar to my business, your business is making a difference by focusing on empowering women. As for me, I am marking this day specifically in two ways.
The first is to acknowledge the organizations that I am proud to support through my business and the second is sharing abundance with a special gift (keep reading…)
Kiva was founded in 2005 by Jessica Jackley and Matt Flannery and is a global non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty.
Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world. In honor of IWD, Kiva is promoting investing in women in order to invest in change.
Malala Fund – Founder Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban in Pakistan in 2012 at the age of 15. The assassination attempt was in response to her stand for the right of girls to gain an education after the Taliban had banned them from attending school.
Today she is one of the world’s most iconic female change agents and in 2014 became the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She is pioneering change in attitudes towards women, children, inequality and education in Asian countries.
The Malala Fund is dedicated to enabling girls to complete 12 years of safe, quality education so that they can achieve their potential and be positive change-makers in their families and communities.
United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up Campaign is dedicated to engaging adolescent girls into action to stand up for girls in need, empower each other and transform our world.
